DALLAS – The Southern Miss baseball team continues its tough 13-game stretch to start the month of March when they play at Dallas Baptist this weekend for a three-game series at Horner Ballpark.
Inclement and cold weather postponed the series start Friday and now the teams will open the series with a 1 p.m., doubleheader with the final and third game set for Sunday at 1 p.m. The squads will play two nine-inning games in the Saturday twinbill.
During this stretch, the Golden Eagles (10-3) have won four contests in a row including the final two games of the Louisiana series in Lafayette last weekend along with home midweek wins over South Alabama and Tulane.
DBU enters the weekend with a 6-6 mark having captured two of three at San Diego last weekend, before falling at Oklahoma, 8-7, Tuesday.
The two teams have played eight games in the series that dates back to the 2006 campaign with the Golden Eagles leading 6-2 overall. The series began with three games here during that 2006 campaign with Southern Miss winning two of three in that set. In three games the following year at Pete Taylor Park, the Golden Eagles enjoyed a home sweep.
The renewal of the series came in 2018 during the NCAA Fayetteville Regional. Nick Sandlin threw seven shutout innings to lead the No. 2 seed Golden Eagles over No. 3 DBU in the regional opener for a 9-0 victory. The Patriots, though, rebounded two days later and eliminated Southern Miss from the event with a 9-4 triumph.
Golden Eagle pitching continues to lead the squad through the first portion of the 2022 campaign. The pitching staff leads the country in both strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.18) and fewest walks per nine innings (1.65). The squad also ranks No. 3 in WHIP (0.91) and No. 8 in earned run average (2.02).
Offensively, Slade Wilks leads the team with a .349 batting average with no homers and nine RBI. He also has team-best seven doubles, which ranks No. 17 in the country. Reece Ewing is next for the Golden Eagles at .348, while Dustin Dickerson, who comes into the series with three consecutive three-hit games, is hitting at .347.
Following the weekend set, Southern Miss returns home for a Tuesday home matchup with Alabama, while opening Conference USA play at The Pete next weekend with Florida Atlantic.
