Golden Eagles Pick Up Pair of Wins on Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Led by the strong hitting of Tata Davis, the Southern Miss softball team picked up a pair of victories on the second day of the Hub City Challenge. The Golden Eagles knocked off Evansville by a score of 7-2 before finishing the two-game sweep of the Alcorn State Lady Braves with a 5-2 win.
The Golden Eagles (11-4, 0-0 C-USA) extended their win streak to seven games on Saturday, while junior pitcher Morgan Leinstock recorded the sixth win of her season against Evansville. Jana Lee picked up a complete-game victory over Alcorn State for the third win of her collegiate career.
Davis was stellar at the plate in both games, recording hits in all six of her at bats. The Philadelphia, Miss. native racked up four RBI, a double and three runs scored to help lead the Golden Eagles to victory,
Game One: Southern Miss 7, Evansville 2
Davis led the charge offensively for Southern Miss in its first matchup of the day against the Evansville Purple Aces. She collected hits on all four of her plate appearances, batting in a trio of runs and recording a double, as well as two runs scored.
Leinstock pitched her second-consecutive complete game and improved her record to 6-1 on the season. She dealt eight strikeouts in the win, allowing just two runs in six innings pitched.
The Golden Eagles opened the game with a pair of runs in the first and second frames. Hannah Borden and Scout Jennings both came out of the first inning with RBI singles to give Southern Miss a 2-0 lead heading into the second.Â
Davis brought Destini Brown home on an RBI single in the second inning and found her way home following a stolen base and a fielding error from the Purple Aces. Southern Miss brought a 4-0 advantage into the third frame with momentum in hand.
An error from the Golden Eagles gave Evansville a run to cut Southern Miss' lead to three, and the Black & Gold were unable to respond in the bottom of the third inning. However, a double from Davis in the fourth batted in Brown for the second time of the afternoon to extend the lead to four.
The Golden Eagles responded to a run from Evansville in the fifth with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning following yet another RBI single from Davis. Leinstock sent the final three Purple Aces back to clinch the 7-2 victory.
Game Two: Southern Miss 5, Alcorn State 2
The Golden Eagles picked up their 21st-consecutive victory over the Alcorn State Lady Braves in their third game of the Hub City Challenge. Southern Miss racked up its seventh win in a row, knocking off Alcorn State by a score of 5-2.
Following scoreless frames in the first and second, Southern Miss struck first in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. A single from Davis brought Maria Smith home to give the Golden Eagles the advantage heading into the fourth.
Alcorn State responded with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the 2-1 lead from the Golden Eagles. A scoreless fifth from both squads set up a crucial situation for Southern Miss in the sixth inning.
The Black & Gold was up to the challenge, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a  5-2 lead on the Lady Braves. A single from Scout Jennings brought Columbia Holeman and Davis home, and a triple from Jana Lee batted in Terrica Williams and Jennings.
Lee blanked Alcorn State in the circle in the top of the seventh, securing her third win of the 2022 season in the process.Â
