HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell on the final day of the Hub City Challenge to the Evansville Purple Aces. The Golden Eagles were unable to produce offense for the majority of the game, ultimately dropping the low-scoring contest on Sunday afternoon by a score of 3-1.Â
Graduate student Destini Brown had a strong day, as she picked up a pair of steals and was walked in all four of her plate appearances. Jana Lee, Scout Jennings, Maria Smith and Rycca Hinton all recorded hits for the Golden Eagles (11-5, 0-0 C-USA).
Freshman Jana Lee blanked the Purple Aces in the first two innings, as the Golden Eagles and Evansville headed into the third frame in a scoreless tie. An RBI double from the visitors broke the tie, as the Black & Gold trailed 1-0 into the top of the fourth.
A pair of spectacular outfield plays from Brown and Caroline Worrell helped keep Evansville off the board in the fourth, but the Golden Eagles were unable to capitalize in the bottom of the frame. Lee was able to keep the Purple Aces at bay in the fifth and sixth.
Southern Miss' lone run came following a trio of crucial hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Scout Jennings reached first on a single, followed by a double from Lee that put runners on second and third. Pinch hitter Rycca Hinton got the Golden Eagles on the board with a single that brought Jennings home and tied the contest, 1-1.
Two runs from Evansville in the top of the seventh sealed the win for the Purple Aces, as Southern Miss concluded the Hub City Challenge with a 3-1 record. Despite today's loss, the Black & Gold have won eight of its last 10 contests and hold a 9-5 record at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
The Golden Eagles fell to 3-2 in the all-time series against the Aces and split the two-game series following a 7-2 win yesterday. Southern Miss also holds a 2-1 record in Hattiesburg against Evansville.
