HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Junior pitcher Morgan Leinstock dished out 13 strikeouts in Southern Miss' win over the Alcorn State Lady Braves on Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles picked up their fifth-straight win in the opening game of the Hub City Challenge by a score of 4-2.
The Golden Eagles scored all four of their runs in the opening three innings and were able to hold the Lady Braves at bay throughout the rest of the game. Four different players scored for Southern Miss (9-4, 0-0 C-USA), as the Black & Gold improve to 7-4 at the Softball Complex.
Graduate infielder Tata Davis got the scoring going in the first inning, bringing Destini Brown home on an RBI single following a wild exchange at the plate. Davis found her way home following a sacrifice fly from Hannah Borden to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead heading into the second frame.
Leinstock sent three batters back in the top of the second inning, as she struck out five of the first seven batters she faced. A single from Brown brought Natalie Taylor home to extend Southern Miss' lead to 3-0.Â
In the third, another sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of Terrica Williams, allowed pinch runner Columbia Holeman to pick up her third run of the season. The Golden Eagles conceded a run to Alcorn State in the top of the fourth, holding a 4-1 lead into the fifth.
Following a scoreless fifth inning, Alcorn State brought a runner home on an RBI single, which cut Southern Miss' lead to two. The Golden Eagles got out of the inning but were unable to put insurance runs on the board in the bottom of the frame.
The Golden Eagles clinched their 20th-straight win over the Lady Braves after blanking Alcorn State in the seventh. Southern Miss now holds its longest home win streak since 2019 and the longest of head coach Brian Levin's tenure.
Brown finished the game with two hits, including a triple, in three at bats, along with a run and an RBI. Natalie Taylor, Scout Jennings and Columbia Holeman all picked up steals in the win.
Leinstock's 13 strikeouts are the second-most of her career in a single game and the most of any Southern Miss pitcher this season. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native improves to 5-1 on the season and records her fourth complete-game victory of 2022.
