Women's Golf in Third After 36 Holes at Tchefuncta Invitational

COVINGTON, La. --Â The Southern Miss women's golf team enjoyed a solid start at the Tchefuncta Invitational on Monday and currently sit in third after 36 holes at Tchefuncta Country Club. The Golden Eagles got the day started with a 296, which was the lowest first-round score they've recorded all season.
Lucy Nunn Burke's squad sat at the top of the leaderboard through 18 holes and sophomore Merche Corbacho fired a three-under par 68 to sit in first place on the individual leaderboard. As the day went on, Friend Chompitakdacha and Jacee Fields climbed up the leaderboard as well. Chompitakdacha used a five-over par 76 in the second round to move into a tie for 18th, while Fields shot a five-over 76 to tie Chompitakdacha at 18th overall. Corbacho carded a second-round 77 to sit tied for first heading into the final day.
After shooting a four-over 75 in the opening round, freshman Momoka Ando added a six-over 77 in the second round to sit just outside the top 10. Freshman Elena Melich is tied for 38th after shooting a five-over 76, following by a 12-over 83. Transfer Icie Cockerham, playing as an individual, is tied for 41st after shooting a 79 in the second round.Â
Southern Miss is 11 strokes off the lead and three strokes behind Incarnate Word. The final round will start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start.Â
