NATCHITOCHES, La. – Demarcus Sharp hit a buzzer beater to help Northwestern State (7-2, 0-0 Southland) end Southern Miss' (8-1, 0-0 SBC) perfect start to the season with an 84-82 win on Sunday night. The turnover column was the only thing that failed the Golden Eagles in Prather Coliseum.
Southern Miss had 13 turnovers in the first half after going eight games without more than 14 turnovers in a full 40 minutes. Its halftime adjustments on the offensive side of the ball led to only six turnovers in the second half.
Felipe Haase and DeAndre Pinckney carried the Golden Eagles in the scoring column as the duo finished with 23 and 19 points, respectively. Pinckney grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to finish with his second double-double of the season.
Sharp's game-winner was his second buzzer beater of the game as the Demons' top scorer hit one right at the half after Southern Miss couldn't hold on for the final possession. Sharp finished with 32 points and was one of four Demons in double figures.
The Golden Eagles clawed back from their one-point halftime deficit to lead by as many as four after an 8-0 run. Haase and Nico Aguirre nailed back-to-back triples to reach that four-point lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
Sharp scored seven of Northwestern State's final nine points to help the Demons to their fifth-straight win. Marcelo Perez finished with a career-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.
All nine Golden Eagles that played finished with at least two points as Southern Miss went 32-of-62 from the floor. It pulled down 41 rebounds for the first time since grabbing 44 against Loyola (La.) on Nov. 14. Haase finished with nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double.
