
Samford Outlasts Southern Miss, 71-59

HOMEWOOD, Ala. – Home cooking proved more than enough to give Samford a 71-59 decision over Southern Miss at the Pete Hanna Center. A 23-point fourth quarter and 29 point performance by Andrea Cournoyer led the Bulldogs to take a lead at halftime and never relinquish it.
Tale of the Tape
The first quarter featured another slow start for Southern Miss (5-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) as the Lady Eagles matched Samford's (4-6, 0-0 Southern) attack, ending the first frame tied at 13 apiece. Southern Miss' Lauren Gross (Southaven, Miss. // North Florida) struck first from deep on the left side, quickly followed by Domonique Davis' first points of the day via a layup.
Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss. // Hattiesburg HS) and Femi Funeus (Plantation, Fla. // Seton Hall) chipped in one free throw each to push Southern Miss to a 9-6 deficit at the 6:09 mark. The Bulldogs and Lady Eagles spent the next four minutes scoreless before Samford broke through at the 2:20 mark.
The two squads continued to match one another's efforts with Samford eventually knocking the final bucket of the quarter to lead 30-28 going into the half.
Gross, the grizzled veteran of the group, led the squad early with eight points.
Southern Miss and Samford made 10 field goals apiece with Samford taking more shots. The difference of the half proved to be offensive rebounding. Samford grabbed 11 O-boards to Southern Miss' six.
The third quarter continued to be a back-and-forth affair, ending in a 48-42 Samford advantage.
Davis heated up in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of her 17 points in the frame. Despite the late-game heroics, Samford never surrendered their lead.
Davis led both teams in minutes played, never leaving the floor, and Funeus chipped in a game-leading nine rebounds.
