HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Collegiate Baseball released its 2023 preseason All-American teams Monday morning and two Southern Miss players, right-handed pitcher Tanner Hall and first baseman Christopher Sargent, each earned recognition by the publication.
Hall, from Zachary, La., earned first-team honors as a starting pitcher, while Sargent, from Wilmer, Ala., collected a third-team nod.
The consensus All-American from last spring, Hall, posted a 9-3 record with a 2.81 earned run average with 146 strikeouts and only 14 walks as he led the Golden Eagles to an NCAA Super Regional and a 47-19 record. The 2022 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year ranked No. 3 nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (10.43), No. 4 in strikeouts and No. 11 in walks per nine innings (1.16).
His other awards during the year included being named a national semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award, as well as winning the Ferriss Trophy for top collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi. In addition, Hall captured two C-USA Pitcher of the Week awards.
Hall also became the first Golden Eagle to compete in an international tournament for USA Baseball since Tony Phillips was part of the USA National Team for the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba. In his only appearance in Honkbalweek Haarlem in the The Netherlands, Hall started and threw four scoreless innings versus Cuba, allowing three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts to garner a win in the 2-0 triumph.
Sargent registered a .269 batting average for the Golden Eagles in 2022 with team bests of 21 home runs and 58 RBI. His home run total ranked No. 9 in a single season at the school and he was the first Southern Miss player to hit at least 20 round-trippers in a year since Matt Wallner hit 23 in 2019.
During his time with the Golden Eagles, Sargent earned all-tournament team honors for both the 2021 Conference USA Championship and NCAA Oxford Regional. Last season, he was the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional Most Outstanding Player, hitting .524 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI.
Sargent returns as one of seven position players returning for the Golden Eagles in 2023.
The Golden Eagles open the 2023 season Friday, Feb. 17, when they entertain Liberty at Pete Taylor Park in a 4 p.m. contest.
