HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The Southern Miss volleyball team embarks on a four-game road stretch at Louisiana and Old Dominion to close out the regular season. The Golden Eagles (16-8, 8-4 Sun Belt) first travel to Lafayette to face the Ragin' Cajuns (13-8, 7-5 Sun Belt) on Thursday, Nov. 3 and Friday, Nov. 4.
Thursday's 6 p.m. start will mark the renewal of a storied series that dates back to 1980. The two rivals have battled 36 times but have only met three times in the last five seasons. They'll continue with another 6 pm. start on Friday evening at Earl K. Long Gym.
Southern Miss extended its winning streak to four straight last weekend, as it cruised to a pair of wins over Georgia State in Hattiesburg. Head coach Jenny Hazelwood moved into fifth place for most wins by a first-year coach in program history and is tied for the second-most conference wins by a first-year head coach. She trails only Abbey Sutherland's 12 Conference USA wins in 2010.Â
Sophomore star Mia Wesley continued to shine for the Golden Eagles in the two wins, totaling 29 kills and 11 service aces over seven sets of volleyball. Wesley finished two service aces shy of a triple-double in Friday's win. Cara Atkinson joined in on the offensive onslaught to add 20 kills to the weekend box score and had a weekend-high seven blocks. Senior Kenzie Smith and Wesley were honored prior to Friday's contest for reaching 2,000 career assists and the 1,000 career kill mark, respectively.Â
Megan Harris, the Sun Belt Conference leader in total digs and digs per set, finished with 23 on the weekend. She was one of five Golden Eagles to finish with double-digit digs. Wesley leads the conference in total kills, average kills per set, total service aces, service aces per set, total points and points per set. Smith ranks second behind Texas State's Emily DeWalt in assists per set.Â
The Ragin' Cajuns come into the weekend a game back of the Golden Eagles and South Alabama in the Sun Belt standings. Similar to Southern Miss, Louisiana is riding a four-match winning streak into the weekend after picking up series wins over Old Dominion and ULM. It's led offensively by Kelsey Bennett's 176 total kills and Reka Kotorman's 449 total assists. Coco Gillett paces the Ragin' Cajuns on the defensive side of the ball with 254 total digs, while Cami Hicks has 79.0 total blocks.Â
