
Golden Eagles Fall in Opener at Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. -- Despite leading in three of the four sets, the Southern Miss volleyball team fell 3-1 (24-26, 22-25, 26-24, 26-28) at Louisiana (14-8, 8-5 Sun Belt) on Thursday night. The Golden Eagles (16-9, 8-5 Sun Belt) received huge offensive numbers from Mia Wesley and Cara Atkinson inside Earl K. Long Gym.
Wesley approached triple-double numbers for the second time in as many matches after finishing with 18 kills, 15 digs and six service aces. On the other hand, Atkinson finished with 10 kills on 26 attempts. Besides the three-point difference in the second set, each set between the Ragin' Cajuns and Golden Eagles was decided by two points.
Madison Bowles and Gillian Hidalgo came off the bench to combine for 16 kills, while Bowles finished with a .462 hitting percentage on 13 attempts. Southern Miss was limited to a .168 hitting percentage as a team and Louisiana hit .218 on the night.
Setter Kenzie Smith dished out 45 assists to go along with 16 digs and six kills. Smith opened the match with a kill after the Golden Eagles opened the night with a service error. Megan Harris finished with 21 digs to become the third Southern Miss player with at least 10-plus digs on the night. Aliah Giroux (9) and Lindsey (8) were nearing double-digit digs as well.
Nyanuer Bidit, who had a massive solo block to keep Southern Miss alive in the final set, finished with six kills and a team-high three blocks. The Ragin' Cajuns posted nine blocks and the Golden Eagles had just four over the four sets.
The two Sun Belt rivals will meet again on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m.
