HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- In its final home match of the season, the Southern Miss (16-8, 8-4 Sun Belt) volleyball team escaped with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-20) win over Georgia State (5-19, 1-11 Sun Belt). Following the Golden Eagles' 8th home win of the season, they honored their seven seniors -- Nyanuer Bidit, Lauren Talbert, Liana Guillemaud, Lindsey Legg, Gillian Hidalgo, Madison Bowles and Kenzie Smith.Â
The win moved head coach Jenny Hazelwood into fifth place for most wins by a first-year coach in program history. With four conference matches to go, Hazelwood is tied for the second-most conference wins by a first-year head coach. Abbey Sutherland leads with 12 Conference USA wins.Â
Georgia State came out in the first set seeking revenge from Southern Miss' Friday night sweep and jumped to a quick five-point lead. A Cara Atkinson kill momentarily sparked a 5-1 run to pull the Golden Eagles within two, but a Clara Bednarek kill gave the Panthers a 25-22 set win.Â
A string of Georgia State errors gave Southern Miss the lead and then a Mia Wesley service ace added to it. The Panthers would respond with a 4-0 run to retake the lead before Southern Miss came back to take the lead for good. Freshman Cailin Demps recorded three of her six kills in the second set, while Atkinson finished with a team-high four. The Golden Eagles hit .333 as a team en route to a 25-16 win to even it at one-all.Â
The Golden Eagles closed out the final two sets in style as they held off Georgia State to pick up their 16th win of the season. The Sun Belt win moved them to 8-4 in conference play.Â
Wesley finished with a match-high 15 kills and added three service aces after exploding for eight last night. Atkinson smoked 13 kills on an impressive .500 hitting percentage. The sophomore also finished with four blocks. Smith finished with 36 assists in her final match in Hattiesburg and now has 2,360 career assists. Megan Harris and Smith finished with 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road for their final four matches before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. They travel to Louisiana on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4. Thursday's contest is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start in Lafayette, La.Â
