
Volleyball Decks The Halls and Arkansas State in Weekend Opener

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – 'Twas the season in the Hattiesburg as the Golden Eagles (13-8, 5-4 Sun Belt) defeated Arkansas State (5-16, 0-9 Sun Belt) in four sets. The Black & Gold collected 62 total kills over the match to take the first of two matches against the Red Wolves.
The Match
Southern Miss celebrated Christmas in October in the Wellness Center on the way to a four-set victory in Sun Belt Conference play.
In the first set, Southern Miss easily handled Arkansas State, prevailing 25-17 in the opener. Cara Atkinson led both squads with five kills in the set en route to a 13-kill performance on the evening. Libero Megan Harris contributed six digs on the set and the Golden Eagles collected two total blocks.
Set two proved to be Arkansas State's best as the Red Wolves grabbed a 25-20 win over the homestanding Black & Gold. The Red Wolves hit a match-best .436 with 17 total kills. Southern Miss' Mia Wesley nabbed seven volley-enders along with three digs.
The third and fourth sets proved to the tale of the tape. In the third, Southern Miss hit just .136 but proved to be enough compared to Arkansas State's .081 hitting percentage. Cailin Demps collected six kills in the third stanza, leading both teams.
The deciding set ended in a 25-23 Southern Miss victory. Mia Welsey attacked for double-digit kills in the period, finishing with 10 on 17 attacks. Aliah Giroux led the Golden Eagles with five digs to finish off the Red Wolves.
