
Volleyball Completes Sweep of Arkansas State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss' "Block Out Cancer" initiative raises $700 for cancer research initiatives while collecting their first home sweep in Sun Belt play. Behind Cara Atkinson's match-leading 12 kills and 17 points, the Golden Eagles move to 12-8 overall and 6-4 in Sun Belt play.
The Match
Arkansas State (5-17, 0-10) fought hard but Southern Miss fought harder. The Black & Gold needed just three sets today to finish the week undefeated.
In the first set, Mia Wesley collected a set-best four kills in a 25-20 win over the Red Wolves. Wesley would finish with eight wood-hitters on the day and a .238 hit-percentage. Kenzie Smith added on five digs in the period to lead both teams.
Set two proved to be the Red Wolves' closest battle yet as they pushed Southern Miss to a 25-23 second set triumph. Atkinson notched five kills in the set as the Golden Eagles earned 17 in the frame. Megan Harris added on eight digs and one ace along with a two Wesley aces to best the Red Wolves.
The final frame was all black and gold as the Golden Eagles earned a double-digit, 25-15, victory over Arkansas State. Southern Miss earned delivered four aces in the set and finished with 11 on the day. Two block assists from Atkinson and Liana Guillemaud left the final tally at seven, raising $700 for the Block Out Cancer initiative. Guillemaud finished with one block and five block assists, leading the squad in both categories.

Southern Miss returns to action next Friday, Oct. 28, for their final homestand of the season. The Golden Eagles welcome the Panthers of Georgia State for a 6 p.m. serve from the Wellness Center. The weekend concludes with a 2 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 29. Golden Eagle Volleyball Senior Day festivities begin after the match.
