RUSTON, La. – In a game that saw Southern Miss women's basketball lead for just five minutes and 40 seconds of the 40 minutes played, the Lady Eagles prevailed with a 65-59 victory over Louisiana Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Junior Domonique Davis led all scorers with 27 points and was joined in double-figures by Rose Warren, who scored a career-high 16 points to help push the Black and Gold (9-5, 1-2 C-USA) over the Lady Techsters (8-6, 0-3 C-USA).
The Lady Eagles struggled to get going in the first quarter with the opening bucket coming at the 6:40 mark from Daishai Almond to end a 6-0 start for LA Tech. After Tech pushed their lead out to as many as eight midway through the first, Southern Miss answered with a three-ball from Davis and Warren, as part of a 9-2 run to cut the LA Tech lead to just 16-13 after the initial ten minutes of action.
Southern Miss took its first lead of the game early in the second on a made bucket from Macy Weaver, and the two teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the quarter with the Lady Techsters clinging to a slight advantage. As the clock was winding down, Almond dribbled up with five second left in the half, throwing up a shot from beyond the arc and banking in her first triple of the season to knot the contest at 29 apiece going into the locker room.
Louisiana Tech threw the first punch out of the break, scoring the first five points of the third to retake the lead. Although Southern Miss struggled to score coming out of the break, the defense kept the Lady Eagles in the contest, allowing Tech to score just seven points over the final 8:32 to trail by two entering the final stanza of play.
Much like she did against Samford earlier in the season, it was in the final ten minutes of action that Davis took over the game. Playing in her home state, the DeRidder product would miss just one attempt from the floor on her way to 15 fourth quarter points. A 10-0 run by the Lady Eagles with less than five minutes remaining all but sealed the win and gave Southern Miss the series lead over the Lady Techsters at 11-10.
The two teams will meet again to conclude the season series on Thursday, Jan. 13 at Reed Green Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.
