HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball picked up a key Conference USA western division victory, defeating UTEP 55-49 on Monday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles (11-5, 3-2 C-USA) now sit just half a game back from UAB at the top of the division.
"We made plays when we had to make plays," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "I thought we did a really good job defensively. Obviously, it was a defensive fight kind of game for both teams.
Southern Miss had their best game of the season defensively, limiting UTEP to just 27.4-percent from the field. The 49 points was the first time the Miners had been held under 50 this season as the team came in averaging over 70 points per game.
Senior Kelsey Jones broke out with her best game of the season, recording her first double-double of the year. The Starkville native led all scorers with 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
Domonique Davis joined Jones in double figures going for 13 points and a career-high nine assists. Davis has scored 10 or more in seven-straight contests, and has now dished out 60 helpers on the year to remain at the top of Conference USA in the category.
Southern Miss never trailed in the contest as Melyia Grayson knocked down the first two buckets of the game and recorded four of her career-best six blocks in the opening quarter of play to limit UTEP (10-5, 2-3 C-USA) to just 12 points.
It was more of the same on the defensive end in the second quarter, with the Lady Eagles allowing just two field goals in the frame. The Black and Gold held the Miners without a basket over a 5:10 stretch midway through the second period to extend their first quarter lead and go into the half up 26-21.
UTEP threw the first punch in the third, answering the call with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 28. After battling for much of the stanza, a Rose Warren offensive rebound and put back with three seconds left extended the USM lead to six going into the closing quarter of action.
Southern Miss went on to ice the game at the free-throw line in the final 10 minutes, knocking down 9-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe, including a 6-of-6 effort from Davis to preserve the win for the Lady Eagles.
The Black and Gold improve to 7-1 at home and are now 9-0 when leading at the half.
Southern Miss looks to match the 8-1 home start of the 2019-20 team on Saturday against MTSU. Tip from Reed Green is set for 2 p.m.
