Golden Eagles Split First Two Matches of Crimson Tide Invitational

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Off the heels of a successful opening weekend, the Southern Miss volleyball team split their first two matches of the Crimson Tide Invitational.Â
The Golden Eagles lost their first game of the season in a 3-1 match with the Buffalo Bulls. Southern Miss was able to regroup for its second match of the tournament, defeating Troy in four sets.
Game One: Southern Miss 1, Buffalo 3:Â
Southern Miss opened the Crimson Tide Invitational against the Buffalo Bulls. While the Golden Eagles showed flashes of brilliance, they were defeated in four sets.
Sophomore Mia Wesley led Southern Miss with 16 kills, followed by senior Kinsley Hanback, who recorded 10. Junior Kenzie Smith dished out 40 assists in the defeat.
Set One, Southern Miss 21, Buffalo 25: The Golden Eagles attempted a late set comeback but were unable to recover from a difficult start and dropped set one, 25-21.
Reagan Leinen led Southern Miss offensively with three kills. Smith dished out seven assists on the Golden Eagles' eight kills. Aliah Giroux anchored Southern Miss defensively with four of her team's 13 digs.
Set Two, Southern Miss 25, Buffalo 19: Southern Miss bounced back with a set two victory, downing the Bulls by a score of 25-19. Wesley led the way for the Golden Eagles with five kills, while Leinen, Atkinson and Moratzka each tallied three.Â
The Golden Eagles pushed the pace, picking up 16 kills to Buffalo's 10. Southern Miss was also strong defensively, putting up 21 digs and six blocks as a team.
Set Three, Southern Miss 22, Buffalo 25: Southern Miss fell behind in the third set, and despite a valiant effort to bring the frame close, lost by a score of 25-22.Â
Wesley led the Golden Eagles with five kills in the set, while Lauren Seibert racked up six digs for Southern Miss. Buffalo found a way to win the set, even while hitting at a lower percentage than the Golden Eagles.
Set Four, Southern Miss 21, Buffalo 25: The Golden Eagles suffered their first defeat of the season following a set four loss by a score of 25-21.
Southern Miss was anchored defensively by Giroux in the fourth and final set, as she racked up eight digs in the decisive frame.
Game Two: Southern Miss 3, Troy 1
Southern Miss bounced back from it's tournament opening defeat with a victory in four sets over Troy.Â
The Golden Eagles were able to overcome a difficult start in the first set and dug deep to win the final three frames. Lindsey Legg led by example from the service line, serving up four aces to help lead Southern Miss to a 5-1 record.
Set One, Southern Miss 17, Troy 25: Troy stepped out of the gate strong, taking set one from Southern Miss by a score of 25-17. The Golden Eagles struggled to get their offense going, recording only eight kills to Troy's 15.Â
Set Two, Southern Miss 28, Troy 26: Southern Miss responded with a gutsy performance in the second set, winning the frame by a score of 28-26 after some extra volleyball.Â
While the set was razor close, the Golden Eagles edged out Troy on offense, with 17 kills to the Trojans' 15. Smith tallied 14 assists to aid her team to a set victory.Â
Set Three, Southern Miss 25, Troy 16: Using the momentum gained in set two, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a large lead in the third frame and never looked back. Southern Miss recorded a hitting percentage of .526 in the third frame.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles racked up eight blocks, closing the door on any Trojan offensive push. Duquesne Moratzka, Lindsey Legg and Lauren Talbert combined for four service aces.
Set Four, Southern Miss 25, Troy 17: Southern Miss took set four by a score of 25-17 and the match, 3-1. Talbert led the Golden Eagles in the fourth and final frame with four kills, helping her team improve to 5-1 on the season.
The Golden Eagles will face off with Crimson Tide Invitational host Alabama tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Foster Auditorium. The match will be streamed live on SECN+.
