HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Following a strong opening weekend in the Southern Miss Volleyball Classic, the Golden Eagles head to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Crimson Tide Invitational. Southern Miss will take on Buffalo and Troy on Friday before facing off with the host, Alabama, Saturday afternoon.
Southern Miss enters this weekend riding a wave of momentum. The Golden Eagles defended home court during the Southern Miss Classic, jumping out to a 4-0 record for the first time since 2015.
The Crimson Tide Invitational will serve as the first road test for this Southern Miss squad. Alabama enters the tournament following a 3-0 stint at the Marshall Invitational last weekend. Buffalo dropped matches against Syracuse and Albany and picked up a win against UConn at the Syracuse Invite, while Troy enters the Invitational with a 1-1 record.
Mia Wesley, Aliah Giroux and Kenzie Smith led the way for the Golden Eagles in last week's tournament. They were named to the Southern Miss Classic All-Tournament team for their efforts, with Wesley taking MVP honors.Â
Wesley filled up the stat sheet in her first tournament with Southern Miss. She leads all Golden Eagles in kills with 52 (4.00 per set.) Smith dished out 139 assists over the four matches and Giroux tallied 67 digs (5.15 per set) as the team's libero.
Freshman Cara Atkinson also shined in her collegiate debut last weekend, and the Golden Eagles will look to her for a surge of offense throughout the tournament. She sits only behind Wesley in kills, with 31 (2.58 per set.)
As a program, Southern Miss outplayed its opponents during their first four matches. The Golden Eagles recorded 14.07 kills per set, while their opponents only managed to tally 10.20. Southern Miss was also superb at the service line, dishing out 30 service aces over the Southern Miss Classic.Â
The Golden Eagles will look to use the momentum they gained last weekend for this test in Tuscaloosa. Southern Miss will first take on Buffalo on Friday at 10 a.m. before battling Troy at 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles will round out their weekend with a duel against Alabama on Saturday at 2 p.m.
