Southern Miss Falls to Alabama in Five Sets

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Kinsley Hanback, Mia Wesley, Duquesne Moratzka and Lauren Talbert posted double-digit kills for the Golden Eagles in a hard-fought battle with the Alabama Crimson Tide.Â
Despite these strong offensive performances, the Southern Miss volleyball team fell to Alabama in five sets.Â
Moratzka, Hanback, and Talbert all posted season-high kills in Saturday's matchup, while Aliah Giroux finished the afternoon with 32 digs.Â
Hanback was named to the Crimson Tide Invitational All-Tournament team following Saturday's match. She amassed 32 kills and nine total blocks over the weekend.
Set One, Southern Miss 25, Alabama 19: The Golden Eagles came out swinging in set one, taking the opening frame by a score of 25-19. Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead, forcing Alabama to play from behind through the entirety of the first set.Â
Hanback led the way for Southern Miss in the first set with four kills on seven attempts. Kenzie Smith dished out 10 assists and the Golden Eagles combined for 19 digs, holding the Crimson Tide to a .048 hitting percentage.
Set Two, Southern Miss 27, Alabama 25: Mortazka dominated in set two, posting seven kills and a .636 hitting percentage en route to a 27-25 set victory. The Golden Eagles overcame a seven point deficit to take a 2-0 lead on the Crimson Tide.
Southern Miss outperformed the Crimson Tide both offensively and defensively in the second frame. The Golden Eagles put up 19 kills as a unit, compared to Alabama's 14 and found a way to limit the Crimson Tide offense, holding their opponent to a .171 hitting percentage.
Set Three, Southern Miss 14, Alabama 25: The Golden Eagles struggled early in the third set and were unable to recover as Alabama took the frame by a score of 25-14.
Aliah Giroux anchored Southern Miss defensively, with eight digs, while Hanback recorded four kills in set three.
Set Four, Southern Miss 19, Alabama 25: Alabama kept rolling into the fourth set, and forced a fifth frame.
Lauren Talbert posted six of the Golden Eagles 14 kills in the fourth set, while Giroux recorded nine digs to aid her team defensively.
Set Five, Southern Miss 14, Alabama 16: In a razor close fifth set, Southern Miss was unable to overcome a late surge from the Crimson Tide. The Golden Eagles led by as many as five points in the final set.
Lindsey Legg was stellar in the final set, recording two clutch service aces, but the Golden Eagles ultimately fell short.
Southern Miss will next travel to Jacksonville, Ala. to participate in the Gamecock Invitational. The Golden Eagles will take on South Alabama on Friday, Sept. 10 before squaring off with Nicholls and host team Jacksonville State on Saturday, Sept. 11.
