Southern Miss Picks Up Six Victories on First Day of NSU Invitational

NATCHITOCHES, La. -- The Golden Eagles' women's tennis team opened fall competition at the Natchitoches Women's Care Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational. The tournament, hosted by Northwestern State, began on Friday, Sept. 24 and will continue through Saturday, Sept. 25.
Sarah Medik, Suhana Das, Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, Monique Burton and Clara Tardivel participated in a combination of singles and doubles matches to open the tournament in Louisiana.
Yazgan won both of her singles matches in the White Singles Draw, defeating Polina Sleptsova of Southeastern in the first round and advanced to the finals with a win over Elise Frigout of Stephen F. Austin. She takes on Ayu Ishibashi of Northwestern State tomorrow in the finals.
Das opened her fall season with a victory in the first round of the Black Single Draw bracket over Ana Jolic of ULM in three sets. She would then drop a match to Brianna Gomez, also from ULM and will face off with Paula Cerda of Stephen F. Austin tomorrow for the third place title.
Newcomer Clara Tardivel won her first singles match of the day against Elena Bleicher of SFA before falling to Ishibashu in three sets. Tardivel battles Frigout tomorrow to finish third in the White Singles Draw bracket.
After falling to Madalina Grioriu of ULM, Medik defeated Anastasia Kouchnareva of Stephen F. Austin and advanced to the consolation final of the Purple Singles Draw bracket. She will take on Rozalie Dohnalova of Northwestern State in the final.
Monique Burton and Medik defeated Putri Insani and Flory Bierma of Southeastern. The pair of Golden Eagles will battle Dohnalova and Viktorie Wojcikova of Northwestern State for a chance to advance to the finals of the bracket.
Das and Yazgan fell to Oleksandra Balaba and Brianna Gomez of ULM and after a bye in the consolation semis, will play in the consolation finals of the White Doubles Draw tomorrow.
The Golden Eagles finish their time at the Natchitoches Women's Care Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational tomorrow.
