Lady Eagles Announce 2021-22 Schedule
9/21/2021 10:30:00 AM | Women's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Returning for her 18th season as the head coach for Southern Miss women's basketball, Joye Lee-McNelis released the 2021-22 schedule on Tuesday morning.
"We overall will be a very young team," McNelis said. "Yet with four seniors returning, and two being starters, we should have some solid leadership to help us get through the growing pains."
The Lady Eagles open the season with three-straight home contests, welcoming Southeastern Baptist for an exhibition on November 1. McNelis will then go for career win No. 500 against William Carey (Nov. 9) as part of a doubleheader with men's basketball, before closing the opening home stand against ULM (Nov. 13).
The Black and Gold will then travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama (Nov. 17), who reached the second round of the NCAA tournament a season ago. The Lady Eagles return to Reed Green Coliseum to host Samford (Nov. 20).
McNelis and the Lady Eagles close the month of November with the 34th annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic, where they welcome Arkansas Pine Bluff (Nov. 26) and MVSU (Nov. 27).
Southern Miss hits the road to open December with contests at Georgia State (Dec. 1) and South Alabama (Dec. 5) and then return home for a Monday afternoon game with Blue Mountain (Dec. 13).
The Lady Eagles close their nonconference slate in Boca Raton, Fla. as they take part in the FAU Holiday Classic (Dec. 19-20) against Alabama A&M and Richmond.
"We believe this nonconference schedule will prepare us for a tough C-USA schedule," McNelis added.
Conference play returns to an 18 game schedule on Thursday and Sunday, after playing on back-to-back days a season ago.
Southern Miss travels to open its conference slate with a trip to WKU (Dec. 30) to close the year and a New Year's Day game at Marshall. The Lady Eagles return to the friendly confines of Reed Green Coliseum for three-straight games against UTSA (Jan. 6), UTEP (Jan. 8) and LA Tech (Jan. 13). The Black and Gold then head to LA Tech (Jan. 16) before hosting defending champion Middle Tennessee (Jan. 22).
The Lady Eagles end January with the first of two Texas road swings, traveling to North Texas (Jan. 27) and Rice (Jan.29) ahead of another three-games at Reed Green against FIU (Feb. 3), FAU (Feb. 5) and rival UAB (Feb. 10).
After playing seven of their first 12 conference games at home, the Lady Eagles close with four of the last six on the road. Southern Miss travels to UTSA (Feb. 17) and UTEP (Feb. 19) prior to closing the home schedule with North Texas (Feb. 24) and Rice (Feb. 26). The Lady Eagles will make the short trip over to Birmingham to open March against UAB (Mar. 3) before closing the regular season on the road at Charlotte (Mar. 5).
"Last year four of the teams in our league made the postseason. We feel strongly that this year's postseason will feature even more Conference USA teams. We are excited about the season and know that the challenges create opportunities for growth," McNelis concluded.
The Conference USA Tournament will take place March 9-12 at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
