HATTIESBURG, MISS. – Freshman firepower gave the Golden Eagles its first win over Marshall since 2007 as the Black and Gold stomped to a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon in Hattiesburg. USM is now 6-2-0 on the season and undefeated in its first two C-USA matches of the year.
Southern Miss played senior Kendell Mindnich (Melbourne Beach, Fla.-Melbourne HS) in the first half where she earned four saves on the day. Junior Alex Helbling (Highlands Ranch, Colo.-Richmond) stepping in-between the sticks for the final 45, notching three saves.
Four Golden Eagles competed for the full ninety minutes, with nine coming off the bench. Senior Macie Pennington (Townsend, Del.-Caldwell) was given the game's only yellow card.
Freshmen Ryan Smith (Biloxi, Miss-Biloxi) and Mia Sadler (Jacksonville, Fla.-St. John's Country Day), each added a goal and an assist to their season books. Sophomore Blessing Kingsley (Carlow, Ireland-Presentation College) also had a goal and an assist to her name in the afternoon. Freshman Ember Temple (Meridian, Miss.-West Lauderdale) also notched a goal while senior Samantha Stiglmair (Karlshuld, Germany- Mississippi State) provided an assist.
Southern Miss started the action in the seventh minute as Stiglmair whipped in a corner kick, giving Smith the opening goal off of a powerful header. Three minutes later, Smith slotted a perfect through ball on the far left flank to Kingsley, allowing her to round the keeper and add to the USM lead. The hope for a clean sheet was denied as Marshall was awarded a penalty kick in the 24th minute, which they successfully converted.
The Golden Eagles increased their lead to 3-1 in the 26th minute thanks to Nolubabalo Sishuba (Cape Town, South Africa-Western Cape) providing a low crossing ball to Sadler, as the freshman headed it home. Sadler would then be the provided for fellow freshman, Ember Temple at the 35 mark, as Temple rushed past two defenders and eventually beat the Marshall keeper at the near post, slotting in the top right corner.
With a minute left in the first half, Marshall would score its second goal of the game to give us a 4-2 scoreline at the break and the final.
The Golden Eagles head to Texas to take on UNT, Friday, Sep. 24, at 7 p.m.
