Southern Miss XC Begins Gibson Era at North Alabama Showcase

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Golden Eagle cross country team opens their 2021 season at the North Alabama Showcase at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala. on Friday.
"We have a veteran group that's ready to build off of last season," head coach Nick Gibson said. "They've been diligent in their training, and I'm excited to see their hard work pay off as we start the season."
Gibson makes his debut as the leader of the distance group at Southern Miss after spending the past three seasons as an assistant at Northwest Missouri State University.
Conference USA Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-Conference USA selection Cassidy Teuscher returns for her sophomore season, while veteran and three-time All-Conference USA member Kate Mattox is back for her final season.
After missing last year's season due to injury, Lina May returns and will look to improve her standing in the record book, as she currently sits at 10th in the 6K and 11th in the 5K. Also returning for the Golden Eagles are Katelyn Cartwright and Sarah Parnell, while Rebecca DeKay is the lone newcomer running this weekend for Southern Miss after transferring from Hawai'i.
The meet serves as a preview to the NCAA South Regional, as the Black and Gold will return to the same course in November.
Schools set to compete alongside the Golden Eagles are Alabama, Alabama A&M, Augusta, Chattanooga, ETSU, Georgia, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, Mississippi State, North Alabama, Ole Miss, Reinhardt, Samford, South Alabama, Tennessee, Tulane, UAB and Wallace State.
