Golden Eagles Drop Final Two Matches of JSU Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- Sophomore Mia Wesley racked up 24 kills over the final two matches of the Jacksonville State Invitational, while Kenzie Smith added 87 assists to her season totals against Nicholls and the Gamecocks.Â
Despite these impressive individual performances, the Southern Miss volleyball team fell short in its last two contests of the tournament to Nicholls and Jacksonville State.
Match One, Southern Miss 2, Nicholls 3
Southern Miss struggled to generate offense in a five set defeat to the Nicholls Colonels. After opening the match strong with a set one win, the Golden Eagles dropped three of the final four sets.Â
Wesley led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills, followed closely by Kinsley Hanback with nine and Cara Atkinson with eight. Hanback led Southern Miss with five blocks, while Aliah Giroux tallied 16 digs in the loss
Set One, Southern Miss 25, Nicholls 15: The Golden Eagles opened the match strong with a 25-15 set victory over Nicholls. Southern Miss was efficient throughout the set and took advantage of hitting errors from the Colonels to open the match with a 1-0 lead.
Kinsley Hanback led Southern Miss with three of the team's nine kills, while Kenzie Smith served out eight assists in the opening frame.Â
Set Two, Southern Miss 19, Nicholls 25: Southern Miss fell behind early in the second frame and was unable to recover. The Golden Eagles recorded a hitting percentage of .133, compared to Nicholls' .276 and fell to the Colonels in set two, 25-19.
Wesley led the Golden Eagles in the second frame, with four kills on eight attacks. Southern Miss recorded 11 kills as a team.
Set Three, Southern Miss 14, Nicholls 25: The Golden Eagles were outpaced in the third set, as the Colonels won the frame, 25-14 and took the lead in the match. Nicholls posted a hitting percentage of .519 with 15 kills and Southern Miss was unable to solve its opponent defensively.
Set Four, Southern Miss 25, Nicholls 20: Hanback responded to the deficit with a strong fourth set, racking up five kills to help lead the Golden Eagles to a 25-20 set victory to tie the match, 2-2. Smith was efficient in the set, with 13 assists on her team's 14 kills.
The Golden Eagles held Nicholls to a hitting percentage of .100 in the fourth frame, as Aliah Giroux, Duquesne Moratzka, Lauren Talbert, Smith and Wesley posted 19 digs collectively.
Set Five, Southern Miss 9, Nicholls 15: Southern Miss was unable to complete the comeback, falling in five sets to Nicholls. The Colonels put up 10 kills to Southern Miss' 5 enroute to the win.Â
Match Two, Southern Miss 1, Jacksonville State 3
Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead, but lost its last match of the Jacksonville State Invitational to the host program in four sets.

Set Three, Southern Miss 23, Jacksonville State 25: The Golden Eagles and Gamecocks battled in a close third set, as Southern Miss fell short, losing the frame 25-23 and falling behind in the match, 2-1.
Moratzka led Southern Miss by example in the third set with a .667 hitting percentage and six of the Golden Eagles' 15 kills. Southern Miss was effective defensively with 16 digs as a unit, but it was not enough to overcome the Gamecocks in the third frame.
Set Four, Southern Miss 27, Jacksonville State 29: Southern Miss and Jacksonville State went toe to toe in the fourth set, as the Golden Eagles fell short 29-27.
Six Golden Eagles posted multiple kills, while Giroux posted 10 digs in the fourth and final frame.Â
Southern Miss hosts the second Southern Miss Classic next weekend at the Volleyball Wellness Center. The Golden Eagles host EKU, Lamar and Chattanooga for a trio of matches. Admission is free to all matches and will be streamed on CUSA.tv.
