Golden Eagles Fall In Double Overtime

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Southern Miss soccer program fell in double overtime to the University of Alabama, 3-2, Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Alabama Soccer Stadium.

Offensively, freshman Ilana Izquierdo (Cali, Columbia-Commeva) shined as she led the team with both of the Golden Eagles' goals. Senior Ariel Diaz (Lubbock, Tx.-North Texas) also provided in the attack setting up both goals, ending with two assists to her book.

Five Golden Eagles competed in the full 108 minutes of play with six coming off the bench to see action. Senior Kendell Mindnich (Melbourne Beach, Fla.-Melbourne HS) tallied seven saves throughout the match.

Alabama opened the scoring in the 29th minute after a shot from 25-yards out. The Crimson Tide extended their lead in the 55th minute after successfully converting a penalty kick. Izquierdo drew one back for the Black and Gold in the 65th minute after Diaz played the ball into her path, curving her shot past the keeper. Less than 60 seconds later, the Columbian international equalized for Southern Miss by taking a shot from the ground, netting it past the sticks. Double overtime was needed to separate the two teams, as Alabama netted the winner in the 108th minute.

Southern Miss heads back home to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on the Trojans of Little Rock, Friday, Sep. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
