HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss standout Suhana Das recently finished a successful stint on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit. She competed in five ITA events during the months of June and July.
The ITA Summer Circuit grants collegiate tennis players the chance to compete during the summer months. It serves as an opportunity for players to sharpen their skills and gain experience against high-level athletes before the fall season begins.
Das opened her summer on June 26-27 at an ITA Circuit event hosted at Oberlin College. She defeated Virginia Tech's Chhinda Som in the quarterfinals and Alexis Nyborg in the semifinals of the event. She capped off a strong tournament by knocking off CWRU's Lily McCloskey in the finals to claim her first title of the summer.
"Honestly, I wasn't playing my best during some of the matches," Das said of her summer performances. "But I'm proud of myself that I managed to find a way to overcome those tough matches. Wins like that are important to me."
In her third competition of the summer, Das made an impressive run to the final round of a tournament set in Cincinnati, Ohio. She defeated SIUE's Amber Hochstatter in the round of 16, Miami's Makensie Long in the quarterfinals and Grace Lampman in the semis. Das faced Texas A&M's Jayci Goldsmith in the final round in a match that went three sets. Ultimately, Das finished as a finalist at the event.
Das rounded out her summer campaign at the 2021 Cracked Racquets tournament in Carmel, Ind. She first defeated Addison Brown of Eastern Illinois before knocking off Sadie Daavettila in the round of 16.
The Malaysia native punched her ticket to the semifinals with a win over Notre Dame's Meg Coleman and secured a chance to win her second ITA event of the summer by defeating Gabrielle Guenther. Das was declared the winner of the tournament after Notre Dame's Yashna Yellayi withdrew from the finals.
Das amassed a record of 12-3 over high-level opponents throughout the summer and secured two tournament victories on the ITA Summer Circuit.
Following her success, Das attributed her strong performances to the guidance of her coaching staff at Southern Miss.
"I would like to thank Coach Steve and Coach Nui for pushing me during the season with their guidance," Das said. "It has helped me and pushed me through tough matches."
