HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- A breakout season for the Southern Miss women's tennis program garnered even more attention this week with a No. 7 final ranking in the ITA Southern Region.
It marked the highest spot in program history. Southern Miss previously finished 10th in 2017 and ninth in 2016.
The Golden Eagles went 8-3 this spring, including a 3-1 ledger in C-USA play, their most league wins since 2013. The squad also took down South Alabama, its first-ever over the perennial power Jaguars, and currently holds a 22-match home win streak. It was head coach Steve Schram's third year at the helm, and he is now 31-9 at the school and 107-44 overall.
"I'm very happy getting ranked seventh here, which is a very competitive region and the highest in our history," head coach Steve Schram said. "I'm also very pleased with our progress since taking over in 2018. Key wins over UAB and South Alabama were great for us getting this recognition."
Individual honors included senior Katia de la Garza earning Second-Team All-Conference honors for singles and doubles, while freshman Suhana Das joined in doubles. Sarah Medik also earned a Player of the Week accolade in addition to postseason All-Academic recognition.
The Southern rankings in order were LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama, Tulane, Southern Miss, South Alabama, UAB and Samford.
