OXFORD, Miss. – Southern Miss senior right-handed starting pitchers Walker Powell (Fayetteville, Ark.) and Hunter Stanley (Hammond, La.), which bolstered a strong Golden Eagle pitching staff this spring, were each named second team All-America by Collegiate Baseball Thursday morning.
Powell, the Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, posted a 9-2 record with a 2.53 earned run average which included a team-best five complete games. In 81 2/3 innings, Powell fanned 79 and walked just 17. In addition, he threw the school's first no-hitter since 2019 against Middle Tennessee last month.
Among active career leaders in NCAA Division I baseball, Powell ranks No. 1 in victories (29), second in complete games (10) and third in innings worked (332.0).
He ranks tied for No. 2 at the school in victories and is No. 3 in both starts (53) and innings pitched, while being tied for No. 5 in shutouts (3) and tied for No. 6 in strikeouts (268).
Stanley, who earned third-team All-America honors last season by the publication as a relief pitcher, posted a 6-3 record with a 2.42 ERA in 14 starts. He led the team in innings pitched with 93.0, allowing 67 hits and 16 walks while fanning a team-best 119. His strikeout total ranks No. 7 on the school's single season chart.
He led the team with 10 quality starts – six or more innings and three earned runs or less – and fanned a career-high 16 against Middle Tennessee, in which he allowed no runs on two hits over nine innings but did not figure into the decision.
He was named to the C-USA All-Tournament team last week after a complete-game, eight-inning performance that included 14 strikeouts and just one walk and three hits. He retired the first 16 batters he faced in that outing against WKU.
In his last three outings, Stanley has fanned 39 and walked one batter.
The duo also earned first-team All-Conference USA honors last month and it marks the first time since 2018 that the Golden Eagles had at least two earn Collegiate Baseball America honors.
Southern Miss opens postseason play in the NCAA Oxford Regional, Friday, with a 2 p.m. contest against Florida State. The game can be seen on ESPNU and heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network presented by Learfield IMG College or through the SouthernMiss Gameday app.
