HATTIESBURG, Miss. – One of the most recognizable figures in Southern Miss Athletics over the past quarter of a century retires this month.
Patrick Stewart, the long-time Assistant Director of Athletics for Equipment Operations, steps down after serving the department for 25 years. During his time overseeing football, Stewart worked 290-straight football games, was part of five Conference USA football championship squads and oversaw equipment operations for 18 bowl games and three C-USA championship games. He also oversaw equipment for a baseball program that captured five C-USA regular season and tournament titles and went to 15 NCAA Tournaments.
"It's impossible to individually thank everyone that I have met along the way in my 25 years, from all the athletes to the coaches and the administrators, but I would certainly like to express my appreciation for the late Bill McLellan, who was the Director of Athletics at Southern Miss, as well as former football coach Jeff Bower, who gave me the opportunity to make Hattiesburg my home," said Stewart. "In addition, I also would like to thank the current equipment staff, including Reid McGee and Leslie Bogle, who were instrumental in our operation during my time here."
Also during his time of running the equipment operations for the department, Stewart helped with the transition of four apparel companies and assisted in the department work through the process of establishing three primary logos.
"I want to say thank you to Patrick for his commitment and service to Southern Miss Athletics," said Southern Miss Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain. "He has been a big part of our department for many years and will leave big shoes to fill. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward into retirement."
The 1996 University of Cincinnati graduate and native of Miamisburg, Ohio, Stewart also earned a master's degree in sports administration from Southern Miss in 1997.
A member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA), he served as the District 4 president as well as vice president for six years. In addition, Stewart worked a five-year team as the chairman of the Conference USA Equipment Managers.
His awards were many during his tenure including winning the Jeff Boss District 4 Equipment Manager of the Year twice as well as earning the Glen Sharpe Award in 2006, given annually to the equipment manager in the nation. His office won the C-USA equipment operation of the year twice during his tenure as well.
Following his retirement, Stewart will enter private business as well as tour the country with his wife, Ty.
