HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's golf coach Lucy Nunn Burke took home the 2021 Mississippi Women's Amateur title after rounds of 75-71-71=217 (+1) to claim a one-shot victory at the Dancing Rabbit Golf Course in Philadelphia, Miss over the weekend.
"I had never played Dancing Rabbit before so I went in with the mindset that I was going to keep the ball in play and keep it in front of me and see how things laid out after that," Nunn Burke said. "I just took it one hole at a time and tried to be present with what I was doing.
"I think State Associations are really important," Nunn Burke added. "It helps not only promote the game, but promote the legacy of what the state has done.
"It was really cool looking at the trophy and seeing all the names that were on there, and recognizing a lot of them."
The Lawton, Okla. native sat in a tie for fifth after the opening round, but used birdies at the 4th and 8th during the second round to start her climb up the leaderboard. She had just one bogey in the round and moved into a tie for second heading into Sunday's final round.
In the final round of play, Nunn Burke once again fired a one-under 71, using four birdies in the round to take the title.
"It was neat to see the number of junior players in the field. I know that we're doing a lot of things right in our state and it makes me excited for the future of Mississippi golf," Nunn Burke concluded.
Nunn Burke recently concluded her third season as the head coach of the Golden Eagles, which saw Merche Corbacho earn C-USA Freshman of the Year honors, the first league-superlative award in program history. Corbacho's 75.30 stroke average was the best by a Golden Eagle freshman, as well as the seventh-best season overall. Three of the eight-best individual seasons have come in the Nunn Burke era.
