HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Will McGillis' sacrifice fly in the 10th inning lifted Southern Miss to a Conference USA series-opening victory over Middle Tennessee 2-1 Friday night at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles improved to 30-15 overall and 17-7 in Conference USA play as they now have captured 30 or more victories in each of the last 19 seasons.
The game remained scoreless through nine innings as Golden Eagle starter Hunter Stanley and Blue Raider pitcher Trent Siebert locked horns for quite the pitchers' duel.
Stanley retired the first 16 batters he faced before giving up a double that jumped over the first base bag into the right field corner. For the game, Stanley fanned 16 and allowed just two hits and three base runners total – one reached via an error – as his strikeout total tied for the fourth best in school history with Ed Assaf (vs. Spring Hill, 4/6/68) and Chuck Shive (vs. Towson, 3/19/89).
Heading into the 10th with a runner on second to start the frame, Ryan Och entered in relief for Southern Miss. After getting a strikeout, Och balked the runner to third before a suicide squeeze bunt from Brett Coker gave Middle Tennessee (21-22-1, 10-14-1) its lone run.
In the bottom of the 10th with Reed Trimble placed at second, Charlie Fischer opened the frame with a groundout to move Trimble to third. Christopher Sargent then hit a ball to second base that was drawn in and the throw was late to get Trimble to tie the score. Billy Garrity was then hit by a pitch by David Zoz, who entered the game for Siebert with two outs in the eighth.
Danny Lynch followed with a single to load the bases before McGillis collected the game-winning sacrifice fly to score Sargent. The walk-off victory was the 21st for the Golden Eagles since the start of the 2017 season and the 18th-straight for the Golden Eagles over Middle Tennessee. Southern Miss also improved to 3-0 in extra innings in 2021.
Och threw the final inning to earn the victory, allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk to improve to 6-0, while Zoz allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and a strikeout to suffer the loss and fall to 6-2.
Siebert gave up no runs on seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over 7 2/3 frames for the visiting Blue Raiders.
The series continues with a 2 p.m., doubleheader Saturday.
