Softball Splits with UTEP in the First Conference USA Series of the Season

The Golden Eagles concluded the series with 42 hits, nine of which were home runs.
EL PASO, Texas – The Golden Eagles split Saturday's C-USA doubleheader defeating UTEP in game one 9-3 but fell short in game two dropping the contest 8-5 to the Miners.
Game One
The Golden Eagles came out strong offensively in game one plating two runs in the second inning on a double by freshman Maria Smith. Southern Miss would pull away in the top of the fourth lighting up the scoreboard with five runs on two homers from Alyssa Davis and Hannah Borden. Senior Destini Brown would knock a solo shot of her own to solidify a 9-3 Golden Eagles' victory.
UTEP would scratch three runs on the contest but could not overcome the deficit.
Pitcher Karsen Pierce would record the win for the Golden Eagles and advances to 4-3 on the season.
Game Two
Game two of the doubleheader proved to be a hard-fought battle between two determined programs.
Davis continued her hot streak from the batters' box with a solo home run in the top of the first to give Southern Miss an early lead. Catcher Hannah Borden would follow Davis' lead driving a home run of her own in the second inning. to The Golden Eagles would score again in the fourth and seventh frame, but fell to the Miners 8-5.
The Golden Eagles saw three different pitchers throughout the game. Kaylan Ladner got the start for Southern Miss and was relieved by freshman Karsen Pierce after one and one third innings pitched. Makenna Pierce closed out the game getting the final two outs for the Golden Eagles. The three pitchers combined for six innings pitched. Ladner received the loss and moves to 9-3 on the season.
Next Time Out
The Golden Eagles' weekday matchup scheduled Tuesday, April 6 versus Mississippi Valley State has been cancelled. The Golden Eagles will be back in action next Saturday, April 10 in C-USA doubleheader at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. CT when they host UTSA in Hattiesburg.
