HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Despite shooting its fourth lowest team round of the season, the Southern Miss men's golf team fell a spot to sixth place in the team standings, Tuesday, after the second day of the Conference USA Championships at Texarkana, Ark.
The Golden Eagles shot a one-under par 287 at the par-72, 6,969-yard Texarkana Country Club. Four Golden Eagles recorded par or below rounds as Brian Richards paced the Golden Eagles with a 71, while Matt Lorenz, Thongpipat Rattanayanon and Brice Wilkinson each collected rounds of 72. Robbie Latter added an 80 to round out the day's individual scores for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss enjoyed a strong start to the day as they found themselves as good as minus-five and had jumped as high to No. 2 in the team standings at one point during the round, but strong finishes from Middle Tennessee and UAB placed them ahead of the Golden Eagles.
"The golf course certainly allowed for lower scoring today," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "We played a solid round of team golf. Our guys had it going through the majority of the second round. We didn't finish things off the way we would like, but good news, we're still in the hunt for match play.
"It doesn't matter if you come in first or fourth in stroke play, because everyone starts fresh in match play. Tomorrow all we are focused on is posting a low enough number to qualify for match play."
Middle Tennessee shot a 13-under par 275 to jump nine places in the standings and move into first with a total of 571, while No. 33 Charlotte and No. 44 UTSA are tied for second at three-under (573), North Texas holds fourth at 574 and No. 38 UAB is in fifth place with a 575. The Golden Eagles trail the Blazers by two strokes at 577.
In the individual race, Lorenz holds a two-day total of 141 – tying his season 36-hole low – to hold a seven-place tie. Rattanayanon is tied for 15th with a 143 as he had tied his career 36-hole low. Both Richards and Wilkinson rank tied for 26th with 147 stroke totals, while Latter is tied for 58th with a 155.
The final round is set for Wednesday, starting at 8 a.m. The top four in the team standings move on to match play with a pair of semifinal matchups (No.1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3), before the winners of those two meetings play for the championships.
