HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Senior Matt Lorenz fired a three-under 69 and freshman Thongpipat Rattanayanon added a 71 to lead Southern Miss to a fifth-place showing Monday following the first 18 holes of the C-USA Men's Golf Championship in Texarkana, Ark.
The Golden Eagles, who are playing the tournament at the par 72, 6,969-yard Texarkana Country Club, put together a two-over par 290 team score.
The tournament continues with 18 more holes on Tuesday and Wednesday, before the event transitions into match play on Thursday with the top four teams advancing for a chance to win the team crown.
"This event is two tournaments in one," said Southern Miss golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Our goal this week is to qualify for match play, then reset and pick up the aggressiveness. Today, we played solid as a group. We made some silly mistakes that we hope to clean up over the next couple rounds.
"In all, round one was a success since we put ourselves in a good position to make a move in round two."
The Golden Eagles find themselves one stroke out of fourth place behind Louisiana Tech and two strokes behind North Texas. No. 44 ranked UTSA leads the field after the opening day with a five-under 283, with No. 33 Charlotte ranking second with a two-under 286.
Individually, both Lorenz and Rattanayanon find themselves among the Top 10 after the first round.
Lorenz led the Golden Eagles with five birdies, three over the final nine holes, to hold a third-place tie, while Rattanayanon birdied two of his final three holes to find himself in a five-way tie for 10th place.
Brice Wilkinson and Robbie Latter each added a 75 to hold a 31st-place tie, while Brian Richards shot a 76 to sit in a 43rd-place tie.
The tournament continues with 18 more holes Tuesday starting at 8 a.m. Fans can follow the action by clicking here.
