Softball Opens Conference USA Play Versus UTEP

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Softball (18-12, 0-0 C-USA) opens Conference USA play with its series versus UTEP (5-11, 0-0 C-USA) featuring two double headers Friday and Saturday in El Paso, Texas.
The contest will be held at Helen of Troy Field and will be available for viewing on C-USA TV.

The Golden Eagles fell in their last matchup versus Mississippi State Wednesday afternoon 2-1 in a nine innings contest. The game saw outstanding performances from pitchers Karsen Pierce and Kaylan Ladner who combined for nine innings pitched. K. Pierce recorded a solo home run in the fifth inning to tie the game at one to one. The game would remain tied until the Bulldogs plated a run in the top of the ninth. Southern Miss dropped the extra-innings contest to the in-state rival Bulldogs by one run.
Golden Eagles to Watch
Senior Alyssa Davis leads the Golden Eagles in batting average hitting .323 at the plate. Davis leads the C-USA with 22 RBI's and 31 hits.
Destini Brown has proved to be an offensive weapon for the Golden Eagles leading the C-USA with 23 walks, 29 runs scored and 18 stolen bases. Brown is 18 for 18 on steals remaining perfect on attempts through her senior campaign.
Catcher Hannah Borden is tied for fifth in the conference with K. Pierce each recording five home runs on the season.
The Golden Eagles lead the C-USA from the circle in multiple categories. The Golden Eagles' pitching staff has posted an notable ERA of 2.10 leading the conference with 221 strikeouts. The Golden Eagles have recorded 18 wins and five saves on their 2021 campaign.
A Quick Look at UTEP
UTEP recently ended a four-game skid defeating Texas Tech at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic.
Redshirt sophomore Idalis Mendez leads the conference and is seventh in the country with a .537 batting average and a .620 on-base percentage.
Fifth-year Bryanna Molina is tenth in C-USA with a .370 batting average.
The Miners rank fourth in the conference as a team in batting average at .282 on the season.
