HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss is ready to return from its two-week break in the schedule, hosting UAB at 1 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Both will air for free on CUSA.tv and are closed to the general public.
Sunday's match will also feature postgame senior recognition of Madison Lawler and Piper Matsumoto.Â
Southern Miss (7-4, 2-2 C-USA) last competed Feb. 21-22, defeating LA Tech twice on the road. Lauren Talbert was the team's top offensive performer, registering 26 kills and a .367 hitting percentage. Her 16 in the Monday sweep marked a season-high, while also adding a season-high 18 digs Sunday.
Matsumoto was quite impressive with 12.7 assists/set, which by comparison would lead C-USA. Her 49 dishes on Sunday were a season-high, as were the Golden Eagles' 63 kills as hitting a solid .238 and .263 each day.
Duquesne Moratzka remains in the lead for kills with 142 and 3.64 per set, ranking seventh in the league for kills and points. Madison Lawler, who ranks eighth in school history with 1,265 digs, is also third with 4.59 per set. The Golden Eagles also have the distinction of being the only team in the league with two setters in the top-10 (Matsumoto fourth with 9.60 assists/set; Kenzie Smith eighth at 8.68).
UAB is 6-5 and 5-3 in the league, one of three teams to play eight matches already. The Blazers got the best of Southern Miss in the lone 2019 meeting, which also snapped the Golden Eagles' five-match streak in the series. Â
