HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Golden Eagle volleyball team found some extra life with a brilliant third-set display, but UAB bounced back and took a 3-1 win to open the two-match homestand Sunday.
The two teams will rematch Monday at 1 p.m. UAB improved to 7-5 and 6-3 in the league.
The Golden Eagles (7-5, 2-3 C-USA) rallied from having 19 total kills and hitting percentages of .194 and .105 to tally 15 and a .393 clip in the third-set alone. Kenzie Smith put together 21 assists in her third and fourth sets, her first times in the rotation.
"We started off too slow today," head coach Stephanie Radecki said. "We made some changes but against a strong offensive team, it wasn't enough. I felt like Gillian (Hidalgo) and Kenzie did a nice job off the bench. We have to bounce back quickly and be a better team tomorrow."
The first three sets were telling from the outset as to which team would be victorious. UAB led 9-3 and 9-4 before the Golden Eagles had their own 9-5 lead in their only win. Southern Miss fell victim to an 8-2 run in the fourth and final that allowed UAB to turn a tie into a 15-9 margin and force Southern Miss' second timeout.
Duquesne Moratzka led the way with 17 kills, one off a season-high set in a five-set win over Southeastern Louisiana. She has been in double-figures for that department in 10 of 12 contests this year.
