HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss soccer team's relentless pressure in the first half paid off with a 3-1 win over UTEP on Saturday afternoon. It marked the Golden Eagles' highest output since Oct. 20, 2019, also against the Miners and 3-1.
Southern Miss (3-2, 1-1 C-USA) kept the ball on its side of the field for much of the first half, breaking through twice with goals by senior Caitlin Pierce and freshman Aubrey Olin in the 10th and 42nd minutes, respectively. Senior Alice Campos also added one in the 74th, all marking their first of the season.
Pierce's came via a corner that was batted around amongst the swarm, while Olin headed one in via a great pass by JoAnnie Ramos. Campos' fake inside the box, then a step-out move, followed by a low liner to the right corner of the net marked the highlights. I
The Golden Eagles had a 22-4 advantage in shots, as well as 13-2 in ones on goal. The Miners, whose lone goal came in the 78th minute, were also tagged with a pair of yellow cards.
"Any time you win, it changes the energy," head coach Mohammed El-Zare said. "I'm really proud of everybody. Macie Pennington was our rock and a force today. She created a lot of chances for us, and she deserves credit. With our seniors, particularly JoAnnie Ramos, Jenny Caracheo and Ariel Diaz, they don't just talk the talk but also walk the walk. It showed today that they can make people better, as well as with Caitlin Pierce and Madisyn Flammia in the back."
Southern Miss also maintained its season-long routine of Kendell Mindnich keeping the goal in the first half, with Sarah Preston relieving after the intermission.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday at UTSA.
