Southern Miss Softball Falls to Auburn in the First Two Games of the Auburn Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles dropped back-to-back game to the Auburn Tigers in the first two games of the Auburn Invitational.
Game one
In game one the Golden Eagles fell to the Tigers 6-4. The game saw competitive performances from pitchers Karsen Pierce and Kaylan Ladner. The two combined for six complete innings allowing eight hits and giving up only two walks. Pierce, who started the game, fell to 2-2 on the season.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles were quiet through six, but that all changed when catcher Hannah Borden homered to left center field scoring Alyssa Davis and Destini Brown on a three-run jack.
Defensively Southern Miss had two errors on the outing. Each error occurred in the first inning allowing the Auburn Tigers to take an early 3 run lead.
The game was decided in the top of the seventh inning. The Golden Eagles were unable to plate any runs resulting in 6-4 Tiger victory.
Game two
The second game of the doubleheader saw a defensive standoff between the Golden Eagles and the Tigers. Starting pitcher, Morgan Leinstock, pitched four complete innings striking out three batters before being relieved by Kaylan Ladner in the fifth. Ladner would finish off the game without allowing a single run.
The Golden Eagles remained scoreless through the competition until the sixth inning. Borden would notch an RBI single scoring Davis from second base. This would be the only run scored for the Golden Eagles on the contest.
Game two was concluded with a final score of 2-1.
Southern Miss takes on Troy tomorrow morning in a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 a.m. (CT). The two games will conclude the tournament and the weekend for the Golden Eagles.

The Trojans and the Golden Eagles have met 16 times throughout program history. Troy leads the series with an all-time record of 16-4. The two last met in a 2018 doubleheader. The Golden Eagles won game one 6-5 while the Trojans took game two 8-5.
