The Golden Eagles shine in an extra-inning walk-off victory.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles move to 12-8 after splitting games with Troy in Saturday's doubleheader. Game one ended in a 5-4 Trojan victory, but the Golden Eagles bounced back in game two winning in walk-off fashion.
Game One
The first game of the doubleheader saw competitive performances on both sides of the field. Pitchers Kaylan Ladner and Makenna Pierce brought the heat for the Golden Eagles from within the circle. The two together accounted for seven innings pitched and recorded seven strikeouts. Pierce relieved Ladner in the second inning and competed through the end of the contest. She ended the contest giving up only two runs. Ultimately, the Trojans were triumphant and M. Pierce recorder her third loss of the season.
The Golden Eagles only saw four hits throughout the contest. Left fielder Karley Nichols was responsible for two hits and notched one RBI. Georgia native, Terrica Williams had a productive day in the batter's box recording three RBI's. Destini Brown and Columbia Holeman each had a stolen base on the outing.
The Golden Eagles maintained a lead heading into the seventh inning, but the Trojans seized an opportunity to score on a two RBI double. The Golden Eagles would not overcome the deficit and dropped game one 5-4.
Game Two
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader saw outstanding performances across the board.
"I am really proud of how the team fought today," said coach Brian Levin. "It was nice to see the team end with a solid win. We never gave in and did not let the tough losses early on affect us. The team showed a lot of grit, and I am most proud of that."
Pitcher Karsen Pierce tossed a complete game and held the Trojans to three runs through eight innings. The Daphne, Alabama native struck out six batters and gave up nine hits on the contest. K. Pierce did not give up any walks throughout the contest. K. Pierce improves to 3-2 on the outing.
On offense, the Golden Eagles were led by Destini Brown who recorded two doubles and stole two bases. Alyssa Davis played a crucial role in the Golden Eagles' success timing two singles and bringing in two RBI's.
Heading into extra innings the Golden Eagles were down a score to the Trojans. Third baseman Heather Hill would seize a game-winning opportunity by lacing a line drive over the head of the Troy left fielder. This knock would sending Tata Davis in for the score and win the game.
The Golden Eagles concluded the Auburn Invitational with a 4-3 walk-off victory.
Next time out
