JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Solo home runs by Cole Frederick and Jaylen Williams highlighted a 13-hit Jacksonville State attack in a 6-0 win over Southern Miss Friday night in the first of a three-game series at Jim Case Stadium.
The two teams continue the series Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest, moving up two hours due to expected cold weather in the evening.
In the opener, the Gamecocks took the early advantage as Frederick led off the first with an opposite field home run on the first pitch he saw to give Jax State the 1-0 advantage on his first round-tripper of the season.
Southern Miss loaded the bases to start the fourth on a walk to Gabe Montenegro, a bunt single by Reed Trimble and a single by Charlie Fischer, but Edwards worked out of the jam with three straight strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles also had a pair of runners in scoring position in both the sixth and ninth but could not manage to score in the game as the visitors left nine runners stranded.
Three Gamecock pitchers registered 12 Southern Miss strikeouts as Christian Edwards (1-1) went 5 2/3 innings to start the contest and surrendered two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts to get the win. Jackson Tavel added a 1 2/3 of scoreless relief, while Trey Fortner registered the final five outs to earn his first save of the year.
Williams blasted his second home run of the year for Jax State and the Gamecocks added another run on a RBI single from Nash Adams in the fourth, before adding another run in the fifth on a solo homer by Alex Strachan – his first of the year.
The Gamecocks finished their scoring with two more runs in the eighth on an RBI triple from Isaac Alexander and a single by Adams.
Golden Eagle starter Hunter Stanley allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over four innings to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
Trimble led the Golden Eagle offense with two of their six hits.
