The Golden Eagles Fall to Mississippi State in Extra Innings

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team went toe-to-toe with the Mississippi State Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon but came up short, losing 2-1 in nine innings. The Golden Eagles were edged out by an extra-inning RBI double which proved to be the difference in the game.
The Golden Eagles move to 18-12 on the season.
From the Circle
Karsen Pierce took the start for the Golden Eagles pitching 5.1 innings before being relieved by junior Kaylan Ladner in the top of the fifth inning. Pierce gave up one run in the second inning but held the Bulldogs through the remainder of her time in the circle. The Bulldogs would not score again until the ninth inning. Ladner recorded the midweek loss and moves to 8-2 on the season.
At the Plate
K. Pierce led the Golden Eagles offensively recording a solo homerun in the fifth inning and followed suit in the eighth lacing a single down the right field line. Maria Smith would be the only other Golden Eagle to see a hit on the night knocking a base hit in the bottom of the fifth. The Golden Eagles ended the contest with three hits.
Next Time Out
The Golden Eagles begin conference play this Friday when they travel to El Paso, Texas to take on the UTEP Miners. The Minors (5-11) dropped three of their last four contest at the Jeannine Mchaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas.
