HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Golden Eagle volleyball team reeled off a 7-0 run to lead 21-18 in the third set, but UTEP rallied back from set-point with three-straight to sweep Southern Miss' season finale (14-25, 18-25, 25-27) on Saturday afternoon.
The rally began with Kenzie Smith's setter dump, followed by a UTEP bad set that made it 18-16. Three more kills (Lauren Talbert, Duquesne Moratzka, Kinsley Hanback) as well as two Miner errors forced another timeout as the Golden Eagles led 21-18. After a service error gave the visitors set point, UTEP responded with a kill, block and another kill to close it out.
The Miners were able to build solid leads in the first set, going up 12-6 and 20-10. The hosts held a 14-13 advantage in the second before claiming three of the next four points that proved to be too much to overcome.
Hanback led the squad with nine kills and a .400 clip, while Talbert and Moratzka followed with seven and six, respectively.
Madison Lawler finished with 1,389 digs, good for seventh in program history. She is the fourth since 2000 to reach that amount. Piper Matsumoto was the program's other senior.
