Southern Miss Men’s Golf Finds Themselves in 11th after Opening Day at Old Waverly Collegiate Championship

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team shot a seven-over-par 295 Friday in the opening round of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Miss.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday with 18 more holes at the par 72, 7,088-yard Old Waverly Club course before finishing the event on Sunday with the final round of the 54-hole event. The teams will go off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees, Saturday, starting at 8 a.m.
Golden Eagle senior Matt Lorenz collected an eagle and two birdies for the Golden Eagles to shoot a one-under 71 to lead the team, holding on to a 15th-place tie after the opening round.
Junior Hunter Atkins, who hails from West Point, shot a two-over 73 for an 48th-place tie, while Brice Wilkinson, Robbie Latter and Brian Richards all collected a three-over 75 to tie for 59th-place.
In a field that includes nine ranked squads, No. 25 LSU leads the way with a seven-under 281, followed by No. 10 Vanderbilt (283) and No. 13 Georgia (283), No. 9 Texas A&M (285), No. 21 Tennessee and East Tennessee State (286), host and No. 46 Mississippi State (287), Kansas State (289), No. 20 Texas Tech (290), No. 22 Arkansas (293), Southern Miss, Ole Miss and Little Rock (296) and No. 24 Alabama (297).
