Walker Powell Named C-CUSA Co-Pitcher of the Week

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss senior right-hander Walker Powell earned the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week award Monday after shutting out Missouri State over eight innings last Saturday.
In the process, Powell extended his current scoreless innings streak to 23, after limiting Missouri State to three hits and one walk as he also fanned six. The senior from Fayetteville, Ark., retired nine in a row at one point to get the victory and improve to 3-1 on the season.
Of the four baserunners that he allowed to reach, only one got past first base with a one-out double in the seventh.
Powell has won his last three starts and saw his ERA lower to 1.29 on the season after his last appearance. He also improved to 23-9 in his career, moving into a four-way tie for third place on the school career chart for victories, tying him with Nick Sandlin (2016-18), Cliff Russum (2002-06) and Damon Pollard (1989-90).
This is the first weekly award for Powell this season and this is the fifth time in his career that he has garnered this honor. He achieved it once during the 2020 season and three more times in 2019.
It also is the second weekly award for a Golden Eagle pitcher this season.
