HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss starter Ben Ethridge retired the first 16 batters he faced and the Golden Eagles scored their runs early in defeating Missouri State 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park to complete the weekend sweep.
The Golden Eagles improved to 12-6 on the strength of having won eight of their last nine games. Missouri State fell to 6-8 on the year.
Southern Miss jumped with two first-inning runs. Gabe Montenegro led off the bottom of the first with a single to center and scored one batter later when Reed Trimble tripled to right. An RBI groundout by Charlie Fischer followed for the home squad as Trimble scored.
Trimble then drove in the Golden Eagles last run in the third with a sacrifice fly to score Dickerson. The Golden Eagle shortstop had led off the frame with a single up the middle, and then went to second on a Montenegro sacrifice bunt before stealing third.
Ethridge went seven strong innings for the Golden Eagles as he allowed just two hits - an infield single in the sixth to breakup his perfect game and a home run by Ben Whetstone to open the seventh. It was Whetstone's second homer of the year.
The Golden Eagle starter, who ranked third nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 27-to-1 at the start of the weekend, helped his cause with six more strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory and improve to 1-0.
Tyler Stuart fanned two and retired all three batters he faced in the eighth to relieve Ethridge, while Garrett Ramsey worked around a leadoff error and a hit by pitch to keep the Bears off the board in the ninth to earn his sixth save.
Over the weekend, Southern Miss gave up a total of only two runs. It was the fewest allowed at home for a three-game set since the Xavier series, March 10-11, 2017, when the Golden Eagles won two of three games in that set.
MSU starter Logan Wiley (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts over seven innings of work.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to Alabama. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
