Southern Miss Softball Sweeps Samford in Saturday’s Doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss secured two wins in Hattiesburg over Samford after being on the road for 19 days. The Golden Eagles shut out the Bulldogs in game one and earned a 4-0 victory. The Golden Eagles followed suit in game two winning by a final of 6-2. Southern Miss advances to 18-9 on the season.
Game One
Final: Southern Miss 4 | Samford 0

Records: Samford (9-13) | Southern Miss (17-9)
The Golden Eagles set the tone early plating three runs in the third inning. The lead was maintained for the remainder of the contest.
In the bottom of the third Alyssa Davis tripled to drive in Destini Brown and Karley Nichols for a 2-0 lead. Heather Hill executed a sac fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
Southern Miss would add another run in the next inning. Maria Smith tripled to left field and would cross home plate in the next play after Natalie Hurdle singled to second base.
Morgan Leinstock earned the win in game one tossing seven scoreless innings and recording nine strikeouts.
Game Two

The Golden Eagles came out strong recording back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first. Alyssa Davis drove in Destini Brown for an early 1-0 lead. Lexie Smith added another run just two plays later bringing in Davis.
Southern Miss continued the offensive momentum with Hannah Borden leading off in the bottom of the fourth and hitting her fifth home run of the year to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 advantage.
Samford made the contest a one run game in the sixth inning after a sacrifice fly and a timely base hit.
The Golden Eagles took the game when Alyssa Davis doubled to drive in three runs for the Golden Eagles.
Pitcher Kaylan Lader earned the win for the Golden Eagles from within the circle advancing to 8-1 on the season. Ladner tossed 5.2 innings before being relieved by Makenna Pierce. M. Pierce recorded her first save of the season.
Southern Miss secured their second win of the day with a final score of 6-2.

The Golden Eagles go on the road to conclude the series with a single game in Birmingham, Ala. on Sunday, Mar. 21 at 1:00 p.m. CT at the Samford Softball Field.
