HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Behind a one-under 70 from Hunter Atkins and an even-par 71 from Matt Lorenz over the final round Tuesday, the Southern Miss men's golf team jumped sixth places in the final team standings to earn second in the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed their highest finish of five tournaments during the 2020-21 season as they collected a three-over 287 team score the final round to end the event with an 864, just two strokes behind winner Wichita State in the 16-team tournament.
"Our team played a great round of golf in cold and windy conditions," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "We tried to catch the leaders coming down the stretch, but simply ran out of holes. There are so many positives we can take from how we played this week. We look forward to our next challenge."
The course, the GCU Championship Golf Course, played as a par-71, 7,207-yard setup over the final day and the Golden Eagles used the new layout to make their run at the team title.
Atkins finished with a 212 total score over the 54-hole tournament for a fourth-place tie – the highest finish for a Southern Miss individual this season – while Lorenz jumped 18 spots in the final placing for a 15th-place tie with a 216.
Both Atkins and Lorenz came up big on hole No. 18, as both players eagled that hole to allow the squad to jump in the team standings.
Following those two individuals for the Golden Eagles were Brice Wilkinson, who collected a 73 over the final 18 holes for a 219 and a 32nd-place tie, while Robbie Latter added a 78 for a 224 and a 61st-place tie. Brian Richards posted a 73 over his final circuit to collect a 225 total and a tie for 63rd place.
The Golden Eagles return to action March 26-28 when they travel to play in the Old Waverly Classic in West Point, Miss.
