Southern Miss Softball Sweeps Day One of Mercer Bears Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Southern Miss Softball sweeps day one of the Mercer Bears Classic securing wins over Winthrop and Western Carolina. The Golden Eagles beat Winthrop 7-4 in game one, and followed suit winning game two 2-0 over Western Carolina. The Golden Eagles advance to 14-9 on the season.
Game One
The Golden Eagles began the game with a leadoff inside-the-park home run from center fielder Destini Brown. In the bottom of the second inning, Winthrop took a 3-1 on two hits and a fielding error. Winthrop would maintain the lead until the top of the seventh inning. In the seventh, Southern Miss scored five runs on four hits putting the game out of reach and solidifying game one victory.
The circle saw three Golden Eagle pitchers on the competition. Freshman Karsen Peirce started the game and was relieved by junior Kaylan Ladner after five innings pitched. Ladner and Morgan Leinstock would each toss an inning to conclude the contest. Ladner was awarded the win and Leinstock earned the save.
The Golden Eagles posted their first seventh inning comeback of the 2021 season.
Game Two
Game two saw outstanding performances from the Golden Eagles on both offense and defense.
Junior Makenna Pierce gave the Golden Eagles a tremendous effort from the circle pitching six scoreless innings. M. Pierce was relieved in the seventh by Leinstock who would secure the fourth save of her Southern Miss career.
Brown and Davis paved the way for the Southern Miss offense accounting for five of the Golden Eagles' eight hits.
Southern Miss clinched a 2-0 victory over the Catamounts in the second game of the tournament.
