HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Walker Powell threw eight shutout innings and the Golden Eagles scored the game's only run in the opening frame as Southern Miss defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park to capture the non-conference baseball series.
The game marked only the second 1-0 decision in the 53-game series with the Golden Eagles winning the other one at Pete Taylor Park on March 4, 2007.
Powell retired the first 11 batters he faced before giving up a single up the middle to Bobby Lada with two outs in the fourth. The senior from Fayetteville, Ark., allowed just three hits in his stint and fanned 10, while not allowing a walk to register the victory and improve to 2-1.
The Ragin' Cajuns (9-7) got only three runners on base against Powell, with only one getting to second base.
Gabe Montenegro opened the first with a single to right for the Golden Eagles (8-5) and after two wild pitches, scored on a ground-rule double by Christopher Sargent to account for the game's only run.
The Golden Eagles had a pair of chances to increase their lead with the bases loaded in the first and a pair of runners in scoring position in the third with one out, but UL starter Spencer Arrighetti (2-1) worked out of both jams with back-to-back strikeouts in each inning
Arrighetti gave up the only run on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts to suffer the loss.
Garrett Ramsey, who came on for Powell to open the ninth, gave up a long single to left before getting a double play ground ball and a strikeout to end the game in earning his fourth save of the year.
The Golden Eagles (8-5) also won their fourth game in a row as they also captured their fourth weekend series win to start the season.
The series finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
