The Golden Eagles dropped game one to the Colonels, 6-2 and then bounced back with a 3-0 win in game two.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (3-2) split Friday's doubleheader against Nicholls (4-1) in Thibodaux, La. The Golden Eagles fell to the Colonels, 6-2 in game one and then bounced back to capture game two by final of 3-0.
In game one, Nicholls jumped out early capturing a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning. Relief pitcher Morgan Leinstock got into a groove in the fourth inning striking out a batter and forcing two ground balls. Leinstock continued to bring intensity throughout the remainder of the game, and in the sixth inning struck out the side.
Unfortunately, The Colonels maintained the lead and ended the contest outscoring the Golden Eagles 6-2.
Southern Miss took game two into stride hitting the ground running defensively. Pitcher, Kaylan Ladner made quick work of the Colonels in the first inning stranding base runners and sending the Golden Eagles back on offense.
Ladner continued to dominate from the circle striking out 11 throughout the contest and throwing a complete game. In seven innings pitched Ladner only allowed four hits. The matchup provided her with a career high in strikeouts.
The game remained scoreless through six innings, but in the top of the seventh catcher Hannah Borden would send a screaming homerun into the Colonels bullpen. The homerun would prove to be the game's turning point and inspired a Southern Miss seventh inning rally. The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 3-0 lead over Nicholls.
Southern Miss and Southern University will meet on Saturday, February 20 for a single game in Baton Rouge, LA. The first pitch from Jaguar Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CT).
